Genocide in Darfur

With much international pressure, the Darfur Peace Agreement was brokered in May 2006 between the government of Sudan and one faction of Darfur rebels. However, deadlines hade been ignored and the violence has escalated. The Security Council of the United Nations, the President of the United States and the US Catholic Conference of Bishops have all called for an end to the violence in Darfur. Since 2003:

  • At least 400,000 people have been killed
  • More than 2.5 million innocent civilians have been forced to flee their homes and now live in camps in Sudan or Chad
  • More than 3.5 million men, women and children are completely reliant on international aid for survival

What can I do to help the situation?

  • Pray
  • Keep abreast of what’s happening in Darfur (Resources listed below)
  • Educate other people of faith about the issue
  • Write to your elected officials, asking them to:
    • Support the peace negotiations already in progress, in collaboration with the United Nations
    • Provide humanitarian aid for our sisters and brothers in Darfur

Where can I find more information?
